Ministry Overview:
Can a Good Cup of Coffee Really Make a Difference?
Land of a Thousand Hills was envisioned by an entrepreneurial church pastor well before the coffee beans were even roasted. His goal? To provide Christians with the opportunity to combine their faith with their daily routine. The result would be a tangible example of that choice and a chance to share that decision with others. Today, Rwanda harvests only premium quality Arabica bourbon specialty coffee beans, grown at high altitudes in the rich Rwandan volcanic soil.
In 2004, Rev. Jonathan Golden first saw an opportunity to cast his vision and launch a ministry that would invest in the lives of one of the poorest nations in the world – a people desperate to heal after a 100 day genocide that left over one million dead.
The Tutsi, Hutu, and Twa farmers are no longer defined by genocide. Instead, they show incredible displays of reconciliation and forgiveness as they work side-by-side to produce a commodity of hope that continues to break the chains by which they were once bound. Here, across the world, you can bless them just by drinking a cup of Land of a Thousand Hills coffee.
In addition to the coffee growers being paid approximately $2.00 per pound of coffee, Land of a Thousand Hills also invests $1.00 per 12 oz. bag sold to fund micro-finance programs that help Rwandans start small businesses. Approximately $3 total per 12 oz. bag is invested in the Rwandan economy. Drink Coffee. Do Good.
What is TFC’s connection to Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee?
The Falls Church (TFC) has partnered with the Anglican Church in Rwanda for a number of years, first sending Global Engagement Teams to spend time at The Sonrise School, which was started under the direction of Anglican Bishop John Rucyahana. Over time, Bishop John has introduced us to other work taking place in the Anglican Shyira Diocese. Members of The Falls Church have been supporting the coffee ministry since 2005.
